The following is a talk I gave in my ward April 2010. It focused on my Grandma so I thought I'd include it in our blog.

I thought I’d start my talk with a story, but I promised one of the kids I wouldn’t use their name. A couple of weeks ago the kids were having a movie night, so there was a stack of DVDs in the living room. Klara the 3 year old was playing around and she climbed up on top of this stack of DVDs. We told her older sibling to hurry and get her off before she broke one. Well I guess, the older one was a little put out to have to stop his baby sister. So he said “come on you dumb baby”. Klara just looked at him and stomped her foot and said “ I not dumb baby, I Klara”. Of course we all started laughing because when she declared her name we knew exactly who Klara was, our little sweetie that brings our family so much joy.

We all use names to let others know who we are. Such as mother/father, daughter/son, teacher/student, doctor/bus driver, member of the church, child of God.

Just as we use names to describe who we are and what we stand for – Jesus Christ also used names to help us understand who He is, and what He can mean for us.
Christ said
I am the bread of life ( John 6:35)
- I am the light of the world (John 8:12)
- I am the good shepherd, (John 10:14)
- I am the resurrection, and the life (John 11:25)

I was asked to speak on Pres. Monson’s talk “He is Risen”, in this talk Pres. Monson tells 4 different stories of people who have passed away, and the heartache that was felt by their loved ones. As I studied this talk I couldn’t help but think of the various people I’ve known in my life that have passed away. The one that had the biggest impact on my life was my Grandmother. My Grandma grew up in Showlow, AZ during the great depression. She was a beautiful young woman. My sister was once told “when your grandma came to Eastern Arizona Collage she was known as the prettiest girl in town”. She was also really fun and witty. My Aunt remembered as a girl she didn’t like eating beans, my grandma would take the much-hated beans into the kitchen and magically transform them into frijoles. She was the mother of six and taught school. She passed away 4 years ago the day after New Years from Alzheimer’s. As I thought of her funeral, I also thought of her life and her legacy that she left behind. And I don’t think you can think of someone close to you moving on from this life to the next with out thinking of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Of His life, His atoning sacrifice.

The first principle of the Gospel is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. My Grandmother had faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. She was taught of goodly parents. And she in turn taught her children. Nephi said “we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ…that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins”. It is so important that we teach our children the happiness that comes from following the Savior. As Christ said “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger”, we want our children, whether our own or the children of our ward, to know that just as our bodies need the nourishment of bread or food, our spirits need the nourishment of the gospel.

My grandmother taught her children the gospel. All of her children had strong testimonies. One of my aunts married a good man that was not a member of our church, my grandma always made sure they had the church magazines in their house. My uncle did join the church and when the San Diego temple was built that family was sealed together for eternity. At her funeral her grandchildren and great-grandchildren sang the words “we have been born, as Nephi of old, to goodly parent who love the Lord. We have been taught and we understand that we must do as the Lord commands – we are as the army of Helaman. We have been taught in our youth. And we will be the Lord’s missionaries to bring the world his truth.

Jesus Christ said “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” At times that is really hard to do we live in a world that is full of hardships and trials. Sometimes they are brought on because of wrong choices or sin, and other times they come and it is through no fault of our own. And it can be so difficult to go through these times; we may feel as if we are surrounded in darkness. But there is a light, Christ said I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life” John 8:12

My Grandmother went through trials. She and my Grandpa had marital problems and divorced. My Grandma had to go back to school and get an education and support 5 young children as a single mother. My grandparents did eventually reconcile and they were remarried. My grandma then had their sixth child, a little boy born with downs syndrome. The rest of her life was spent in care and service towards her youngest child. Through out these trials she stayed faithful, she turned to the Lord in her times of need.

Christ said “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.” Jesus Christ knows us, He knows what we are going through and what we need. Alma taught about Christ “he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor (give relief or assist) his people”. In my own life it’s the trials and difficult times that have brought me closer to the Savior and have given me an understanding of the magnitude of the atonement, and the peace that can come from Jesus Christ the prince of peace.

I was very close to my Grandmother while growing up. My Grandparent’s house was just up the hill from our house. So we would go visit her everyday after school. Of course she had television and we didn’t so I’m sure that had a little bit to do with it. I still remember running a jumping and on my Grandma’s comfortable safe lap during the frightening scenes in Scooby doo.

The week before she passed away, we went to Safford to see her. The plan was to leave our children with my parents so that Ryan & I could go to the temple. Well, our little guy Bryce got a high fever. When I called the dr’s office they wanted us to bring him in before the long weekend to check for an ear infection. We decided to leave the older kids with my parents for the day and go back to Tucson. My parents asked us to stop at the distribution center to get my Grandma a new temple dress to be buried in. Bryce did indeed have an ear infection and the distribution center had one dress in her size. I’ve always felt that this was a tender mercy, helping us to know that it was her time to return home. The night before my Grandma passed my two sisters and I all dreamed about her. And the next morning when the phone rang I knew it was my dad letting us know she was at rest.

The day of my Grandma’s funeral, after the luncheon and when visiting with family was over, we went back out to the gravesite. If any of you have seen the cemeteries around the Gila Valley, you’ll know they are pretty desolate. It’s mostly rock and dirt and some desert bushes near by but that’s it. The cemetery she’s buried in is up on a hilltop and there is nothing at all near by. As I looked around I got this over whelming feeling of sadness and I wanted to say “wait a minute, we can’t just leave her out here, all by herself! This is Grandma!” When I told my mom how I felt, she said “But Grandma’s not there, she’s on the other side with her family”. And I knew she was right, it’s all part of a plan, my Dad, her son gave the sermon that morning at the funeral telling about the plan of salvation. It’s also called Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness. We will all die, and because of Jesus Christ, we will all be resurrected.

In the words of Pres. Monson Then comes that glorious day of resurrection, when spirit and body will be reunited, never again to be separated. “I am the resurrection, and the life,” said the Christ to the grieving Martha. “He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
This transcendent promise became a reality when Mary and the other Mary approached the garden tomb… they found the stone rolled away. … and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.“… they were much perplexed …, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:“And … said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?” 9 “He is not here: for he is risen.”
Pres. Monson continues “As the least of His disciples, I declare my personal witness that death has been conquered, victory over the tomb has been won. May the words made sacred by Him who fulfilled them become actual knowledge to all. Remember them. Cherish them. Honor them. He is risen.”

I'm so grateful to know I will see my Grandma again.

Max was a scoutmaster

I never knew my Grandpa, he passed away the year I was born. However, I do have distinct impressions of him. Fudge- I've always heard about how wonderful his fudge was and no one else can ever make it quite right. Daddy- all my life my mom refers to her father as "Daddy", he must have had a loving relationship with his children to always be know as "Daddy". Temple Worker- whenever I hear about Grandpa Robbins, I usually hear about how much he loved working in the temple. Gardens- and of course every story about Grandpa Robbins usually leads into how much he enjoyed working in his gardens and how beautiful they were.

For Max and Ina's first date they went to visit the Robbins family for the New Year. This is one of the funniest stories out of family history. Grandma told me, she was nervous about meeting Max's family. She slept in the same bed as Max's mom (Grandma Robbins). During the night she had a nightmare and dreamed about a gorilla trying to get her. She woke up and she was strangling her future mother in-law. Things finally settled down but, in the morning Grandma Robbins' false teeth were missing. Ina and Grandma Robbins searched and searched, they finally found the false teeth in side the pillow case.
